I did not feel any of these were like my relationship with either my mother or my daughter and my mother lost her mom when she was only six so don't know much about that at all. I have to say that with both my Mom and my daughter I had/have a very close and honest give and take. Pretty much could chat about anything with my Mom and loved her company and it is the same with my daughter.

I was drawn more to the relationship between Iris and Sam than to any other mother daughter pairing in the story. I believe I found a certain resolution and loving contentment established betwee the two toward the end of the book as Iris chose Sam to be the facilitator to end her life and Sam reflected on her mother's earlier nuturing years. It became possible for Sam to open her life to other people and interests as she realized that she was not depriving her daughter of a loving mother.

In my case it's Iris and Sam as well, mostly for the reasons Julie cited that toward the end the two enjoyed a sort of affinity.
Assisted suicide is a rather thorny issue. I'm personally for the concept but would find it difficult, I know, to carry out. But watching a person suffer, or prolonging a hopeless life, is far worse.
I'm intrigued Raynat was a hospice nurse and feels if would be impossible to carry out assissted death. Understandable, though. It carries with it loads of responsibility. Like "playing God " in a way. But I know I'd wish it if I were suffering. The Iris and Sam situation is a perfect example.

I don't feel we knew the relationship with Violet and Iris at all. We only know a little about Iris and Sam's relationship at the end of Iris's life. There was detail with Violet and her mother and Sam and her daughter. None of these really resonated with me.

I don't think either of the mother daughter relationships resonated with me as they are very different than the relationship I have with my own mother and i knew both of my grandmothers well also. but I hope that in the event that my own mother needed me at the end of her life that I would be able to be there for her
